Myths about Google
Due to some problems with the computer, I was a bit late to the 3rd Google Webmaster Chat. They were making an exciting presentation about the myths that shouldn’t be believed about Google. All I could have was its last slide
Anyway, it’s better than nothing. And here are some of the myths:
- Using “disallow” in your robots.txt will remove your site/page from the index
-> “disallow” in robots.txt just prevents future crawling from Google bots. In order to remove your indexed pages, use URL Removal Tools in the Google Webmaster Tools.
- The more links, the better
-> Inbound links are the most principal factors that Google use to evaluate your site’s PR. But it’s not the quantity that is important, but the quality.
- The only important goal when making a website is getting it listed first in search results.
-> If your users don’t feel satisfied with it, your bounce rate will go up and your ranking will go down.
- It’s best to let old URLs return 404 so that the new structure is naturally discovered.
-> Use 301 redirect instead of letting them return 404. That will make your users not to feel frustrated as well as transfer your rankings in the new pages.
- Using “index, follow” in robots meta tags is important
-> Not really, the default value of robots meta tags is “index, follow”, so don’t take your time to make it again.
- Hosting your site on a shared IP address will cause your rankings to drops
-> I did think so, too. This is a really good news as we don’t have to spend more money on a static IP address
